Slavery Today

The estimated number of slaves in the world today is 27 Million
-Kevin Bales
Founder of Free the Slaves and expert on modern day slavery

All around the world individuals are being forces or coerced into slavery. Instead of being sold in public places, like it was historically done, people are now bought and sold by trafficking rings, producing the third largest international black market industry (drugs and arms taking first and second place). Many of these victims are women and children who are bought and sold into sex-slavery or domestic servitude.
trafficking and slaveryFree the Slaves is a remarkable organization working to assist slaves around the world. By learning more, not only will you be able to help detect slavery happening in your own community, but you will also be able to educate others to become modern day abolitionists.

How do slaves contribute to the global economy?
According to research done by Kevin Bales, with an estimated 27 million slaves working today, the total yearly profit generated by slaves is in the order of $13 billion. Although their contribution only equals about what the American population spends on jeans each year, their contribution is much greater. Slaves provide the labor that produces many of the raw materials and manufactured goods around the world. It would be difficult to go a week without purchasing something that has not been touched by the global slavery market.

i work in a state of the art facility and the requierements have reached a level that i am concerned about. I would like to have a world understanding or standard of measurement by which to understand this. I don’t have a very mental position but the rate of physical movement is high. i would only like to understand this to estimate the whole price of what I am doing. I would like to know more about the definition, especially the “financial control” aspect

Hey Rich,

It would help me understand your circumstances a little better, if you answered a few questions for me: What country/region of the world do you live and work? Depending on where you are working, there will be different institutionalized standards enforced (theoretically) by the government and judicial system. Unfortunately, these checks don’t always work, and often individuals get caught in situations where they are abused by either corporate powers, governments, international organizations or the governments of their own countries.

I don’t know if I can give you a standard to differentiate a bad job from slavery, but if you are not free to choose whether or not you want to continue to do the work that is “required” of you, and you feel threatened or restrained from choosing another work environment, then the situation may require some scrutiny. In the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, human life and freedom are held in the highest regard, but these values are not shared by all people and all around people are enslaved and in forms of debt servitude (when they are required to pay off a debt, they or someone else acquired through manual labor).

If you feel like your situation is not healthy and you have more specific questions- please write again, and I can see if I can help answer your concerns.
